Today is the last day of July and I realised I hadn’t yet written a life lately post for this month. Obviously it wouldn’t really matter when I posted it but I like to have these things done and dusted before the month is out.
Eating
We’ve eaten like kings. Many of our meals have been made with vegetables we’ve grown ourselves. It’s a nice feeling, our stomachs have been pretty happy about it too…
- Stuffed marrow. Made with homegrown marrow! Instead of using turkey mince I make a vegetarian filling from onions, peppers, kidney, beans, garlic, herbs, cheese and linseed.
- Killer mac ‘n’ cheese
- Swedish pea soup because it was cold at the beginning of the month. Any excuse to eat soup really, I love it. This one is full of vitamins and very filling.
- Broad bean and mint risotto made from homegrown beans.
- Broad bean mash. My own recipe of cooked (and shelled) broad beans, whizzed up with butter, salt, pepper, lemon juice, plenty of fresh mint and a dash of milk. You can adjust the quantities to suit your taste but I’ll blog a recipe at some point.
- An amazing vegetarian meal at Silo Restaurant for volunteering at WordCamp Brighton.
Exploring
We had a short break in Cornwall and Scott’s brother took us to the Cheesewring on Bodmin Moor. I’ve posted some more photos here. I instagrammed one of my photos and submitted it to the #howiescape competition… I won! So pleased! Paul, thanks for being my stunt man 🙂
Watching
- Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters 2 (1989). Still brilliant all these years later.
- Surviving the Siberian Wilderness for 70 years. Amazing woman, well worth the watch.
Enjoying
Summer evening walks. Scott took this photo at one of our favourite spots. There is a rickety wooden bench with a view over fields and a couple of cottages, it’s really peaceful.
Natural light in the house. Our bedroom is always light but in the Summer the sun reaches high enough to shine on our bed. It makes me want to crawl in, be lazy and nap in the sun all day. Hopefully I’ll come back as a cat in my next life.
Growing
Despite spending fairly little time at the allotment over the last month, it’s booming. Weeds are sprouting up all over the place but we are getting a good harvest of fruit and veggies.
Making
I’ve been experimenting with natural fabric dyes. Originally I was only going to do one or two swatches but I got carried away and ended up making about fifteen! I’ll write a post about it next week but in the meantime I wanted to show you the colours I managed to dye so far.
Feeling
Like my body is a bit of a mess. Ten weeks after falling off my bike the scabs are gone (they are were big) but the areas have turned purple and lumpy. I bought a tube of Dr. Organic Scar Serum in the hope that it will help them fade. This is the before photo. I’m using it on my hand, knees, elbow and hip. I’ll post an update next month. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

It sounds like you’ve had a great month! My garden is doing pretty rubbish so far this year – I haven’t harvested a thing from it! Things are finally starting to happen though, so hopefully soon I’ll be getting some tomatoes and courgettes from it!

Tomatoes and courgettes, lovely! I really like courgette cooked on the bbq or in ratatouille. We’ve had plenty of garden failures too this year. The slugs ate all the lettuce and marigolds I planted and spared me one cosmos out of a whole seed pack.
Candy striped beetroot – cool!
I’m a huge fan of Palmers Cocoa cream for scars – it’s literally amazing.
And yes – now I am SO hungry!
Candy striped beetroot is very cool but I’ve never seen it for sale in any supermarkets!! Thanks for the Palmers recommendation. I looked into it and had no idea you could use this cream for scars, or that Palmers made a scar cream.
