Around Stockholm, December 2024

December was a month of snow, blue "daylight", cosy candles, big boots, wooly hats and darkness. We've handled Winter pretty well since moving here, but struggled much more this time around. I can't even really pinpoint why — our friends also said this Winter seemed especially tough though. At one point, I started fantasizing about moving to a Greek island, laying in the sun and guzzling honey feta!

Despite the seasonal struggle, everything looked beautiful in the snow! We're lucky to be surrounded by wooden houses that always look warm and cosy on dark days.

Vast amounts of water froze over. Seeing the big freeze is one of my favourite aspects of Swedish Winter. Landscapes you've walked past many times suddenly look like a new place. Lake ice also makes a funny noise, similar to the sound of a distant train travelling down the rails. A sort of flexing metallic sound. It's like the ice is alive.

^ Walking along Götgatan at lunchtime!

We visited Skansen with our friends, one of their friends, and family. I ended up having to buy a second pair of socks to wear because my feet started throbbing from the cold! We warmed up with hot chocolate and some time in the old buildings. Oktorpsgården from 1870 (below) is one of my favourites (not just because it has a fire, although that helps).

And that’s all for December!
