Around Stockholm, August 2024

August was a month of bustling cafés, striped parasols, sticky heat, loppis tucked away in courtyards, lines of cyclists, pots of heather, blazing sunsets and very heavy rain.

This isn't the greatest photo but I was lucky to capture the moment. I looked out of the bakery window to see her wrestling a large plastic bag over the dog cage, in the wind and rain. I grabbed my camera and only had time to snap without thinking — she pulled away a second later. We exchanged a smile when she saw me with my camera; the dog sat looking inconvenienced.

This mural lining Väktaren 35 (Drottningholmsvägen) is 90 metres long! Created by Linn Hammarsten and Pernilla Lindgren from Graffitisthlm, based on the theme 1960s to now.

The longest scooter line I've ever seen!

This is an advert from the armed forces (Försvarsmakten). We've seen various versions around Stockholm, all aiming to highlight aspects of Swedish life worth defending. The translation is:
SE: Pappaledighet värd att försvara EN: Paternity leave worth defending

Thelins Konditori is my new favourite café. I first visited it for a knitting group and the cake was so good that me and Scott went back together another time. The chocolate cake with raspberry is 12/10 good.

I quite like being on Ringvägen in rush hour. Not for the traffic, but to see the endless streams of passing cyclists.

We laughed out loud when we saw Munters restaurant! In Britain, "munter" is slang for an ugly person.

The rain showed no sign of stopping and I really wanted to get home, so I ran to the tram stop from the doorway I was sheltering in. Naively, I thought I wouldn't get that wet because the run would take less than 30 seconds. Boy was I wrong. I got soaked through to my skin in that short time.

That's all for August!
