Around Stockholm, March 2024

March was a month of thawing ice, påskris, the first daffodils, headlights shining on damp roads, snow flurries, wet gravel under foot and wind that took your breathe away.

Don't let the blue sky fool you, it was still cold!

I see these post vans and always joke about their size being the reason letters take so long to arrive. Parcels are much quicker because they go straight to pick-up points — some Swedish postal trivia you never knew you needed. This photo also gives you an idea of how dark March days were (it was taken at lunchtime).

Seeing deer in the city is magic.

Pots of Spring bulbs started appearing on many doorsteps. In the darkest days of Winter, candles sit on steps and pavements instead.

These pigeons barged their way into Pressbyrån, ate a load of crumbs off the floor and then ran out. Some excellent entertainment while we waited for a bus.

Swedish resilience captured in one photo. Snow fell intermittently all month; more came just when we thought we'd seen the last of it. I know many people were getting tired of it but for me, it was a welcome distraction from ongoing dark days.

This solbulle was heaven rolled in sugar. Walking in the cold left us frozen to the core and in need of a hot drink, which is when we discovered Granero Bakery. Our eyes were bigger than our bellies so we sat in there for a while, slowly munching our way through all the things we ordered.

That’s all for March!
